Neville’s Quarter

Neville’s Quarter is a fiddle / guitar duo based out of Chapel Hill, North Carolina. Neville’s Quarter is a toss up between either attending a goosebumps inducing inspirational folk concert or finally finding that chill campfire circle of friends that you’ve been searching for all your life. Whichever way the show lands for you, you will leave feeling a richer state of mind. Neville’s Quarter’s collection of songs is playful enough for kids to dance to but also delivers more weighty topics for adults to ponder over, well after all the microphones are unplugged.

Together, the two are a highly skilled musical force; they incorporate at least half a dozen instruments in each show and have hundreds of well crafted songs to share. Their main objective as musicians is to break open the shells that trap people inside, and they do so through the lyrics and melodies they share with each performance. Come in out of the cold to find an Oasis and enjoy a warm cup of coffee/hot chocolate while listening to some great tunes!   https://youtu.be/27N3_OXIx_4

CLIMATE DESTABILIZATION: OUR LONG SLOW EMERGENCY

VIDEO & DISCUSSION NIGHT ~ 2nd Sunday of each month, 6:30-8:30pm

We are at a crossroads in our history. We are on the precipice of destroying our habitat, the very earth that gives us sustenance and supports life. Our multiple challenges of climate change, deforestation, overgrazing, fisheries collapse, food insecurity, and the rapid extinction of species are all part of a single, over-arching problem: Humanity has overshot the carrying capacity of the Earth.

Join with others willing to honestly face our situation and have the most important discussion of our lives: how we pull out of our ecological nosedive and transition to a life-affirming global culture, an earth community of sustainability, justice, and peace!

We show a different video each session and discuss a range of important issues and options to address them. For detailed information on each session, see https://betseydowning.com/upcoming-events/ . Information will be posted 5-6 days prior to the event.

Introducing Hart’s Mill Ecovillage and Farm Establishing a Housing Cooperative: An Unfinished Story about Hart’s Mill Ecovillage

How do you live? There are lots of different kinds of residential spaces in which we live. The ways in which we actually own these spaces, however, turns out to be a rather short list. One possibility on that list is called a Housing Cooperative. A housing cooperative is a unique form of home ownership in which a cooperative corporation holds title to dwelling units and directly assumes the mortgage, tax and other obligations necessary to finance and operate the development. A resident becomes an owner of the corporation by purchasing a share in the business. This exciting and educational exploration of housing cooperatives will be the focus of the evening. How does it work? What are the advantages/disadvantages of this unfamiliar form of home ownership? Is it for me? The discussion will include some of the details of how the Hart’s Mill Ecovillage, located in west-central Orange County, is working to organize its housing ownership as one form of housing cooperative. Hart’s Mill member Paul Voss will lead the discussion.

Using the Opposites to Explore Our Inner Worlds

A conversation with Kenneth Turner, PhD (Board Secretary for the Jung Society of the Trianglehttp://jungnc.org/

The smaller integers (0, 1, 2, 3, etc.) are what Carl Jung has described as ‘Archetypes,’
objects wired into our unconscious minds as human beings which form the broad
general structures of our inner lives. We see this in very practical ways when we consider out desires and aversions – which the Buddhists early recognized as the driving motivations of our lives.

Good and bad, hot and cold, dry and wet, light and dark, the list of
opposites is endless. Yes and no, 0 and 1 are also at the foundation of logic, mathematics, and computers – really at heart, logical machines. By examining how
the opposites function in our reactions to life events, both inner and outer, we can come to a better understanding of how our inner machinery operates, and with effort, attain more control over what would otherwise be automatic reactions. In addition to discussing the implications of these ideas, some techniques will be presented for utilizing them to improve our daily lives.

Carl Jung, arguably the most important psychologist of the last century, was
first a younger colleague and later a rival of Sigmund Freud. In contrast to
Freud’s materialistic model of our human nature, which sought to increase
happiness by adjusting us to the demands of society, Jung had a more expanded
view of humanity. He sought, not adjustment, but becoming who we were meant to be as individuals, a process he called ‘individuation’.

Kenneth Turner brings a variety of life experience to his work with people. He earned a PhD in Physics (Princeton, 1962), an MA in Humanistic and Transpersonal Psychology (University of West Georgia, 2007), and passed the National Counselors exam. He has been an astronomer, an administrator, a federal bureaucrat, an executive at a high tech start-up company, a college professor, an entrepreneur, and a psychotherapist. He has married, helped raise children (his own and others), lived abroad, been widowed twice, and retired. Kenneth holds certifications in the Body Centered Transformation work of Gay and Katlyn Hendricks, and in the Enneagram approach of Kathy Hurley and Theodorre Donson. He is an authorized facilitator for the Institute of Noetic Sciences Conscious Aging program and has been involved with Jungian psychology for more than fifty years.  http://jungnc.org/
